Why Full Season Midget?

Midget full season hockey is now in full swing in New England with most teams now fielding U16 and U18 teams.  Players are seeking different avenues than the traditional prep/private school route.  New England has established itself as the hub of prep/private hockey but midget full season teams have emerged onto the scene.  Many of the high end full season programs in the New England area, like the Boston Advantage (Tier 1 Elite Hockey League), New Jersey Hitmen (USPHL), Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL) and the Manchester Monarchs (Tier 1 Elite Hockey League), to name a few, now boast as many or more Division 1 and Division 3 hockey commitments each season than the top prep and private schools.  A few examples of how big full season midget hockey is in the eyes of the recruiters:

  • Neutral Zone scouting services ranks the top 113 2002’s across the United States.  Of the 113 ranked players 79 are from full season U15 and U16 programs (70% Full Season Midget Players!!)
  • The USA Hockey National Development Team (USNTDP) for 2002’s invited 46 players to tryout.  Of those 46 players, 28 were full season midget players (60% Full Season Midget Players!!)
  • The USA Hockey National Development Team (USNTDP) offered 12 out of their 22 roster spots to full season U15 and U16 midget players (55% Full Season Midget Players!!)
  • The 2018 USA Hockey National Championships this April at the U14/U15/U16/U18 levels had 7 out of 8 teams in the Finals that were full season teams (88% Full Season Midget Teams!!).
  • The 2018 USA Hockey National Championship winners at the U14, U15, U16 and U18 level were all full season Midget teams.  (100% Full Season Midget Teams!!)
  • The New England Hockey Journals list of the top 23 players born in 2003 had 16 out of 23 players from full season Midget programs.  (70% Full Season Midget Teams!!)
